Variations on the Ojai Face theme.

Since the mid oughts when I created my first Cafe Press store and brought the Ojai Face into existence, the desire to print, publish, fold, spindle and mutilate the word OJAI has driven me to the edges of prurient folly.

Recently, I’ve been taking iconic images from pop culture and esoteric symbology then skewing, warping, pasting, blurring and sharpening the Ojai Face onto them. Perhaps you saw the GONZOJAI tribute to Hunter S. Thompson.

I present to you the PSYCHOJAI. I love this. The whole concept of merging and recreating recognizable art from a themed word that in itself is unusual enough to form a recognizable face shape that can be plastered all over things. Obsessed much?

It’s a little corny to me to call this Baphomet Ojai or BAPHOJAI. It harkens to my love of the mysteries, the arcane, the magickal, occult and esoteric. This spirit is alive and simmering in Ojai, I’m sure. Betwixt the Theosophists and some of the more eccentric yogis, I’m sure there’s tens of people who’d smile at this design.

Chris B. Olds on Don’t Look At Me podcast 010.

Chris T and Chris B in the Barn

Ojai Valley Internet Radio Jock #1 Chris B. Olds tapped into the podcast channel here in the barn and what a pleasant steady flow that was. Chris is an active session and gigging drummer and is in the process of creating a media network that will Eclipse the Valley and beyond. Like me he is actively self-(un)employed. He’s focused in the digital arts and website construction and maintenance side of things. If you need a website or blog setup, Chris is your man.

I like that the podcast conversation goes a little esoteric and metaphysical. I’m always fascinated by magickal stuff. And I really appreciate his affinity for and dedication to the musicians of the area. Be sure and follow @ojaivalleyradio on Twitter and them on facebook.

Rain Perry on Don’t Look At ME podcast 009

Rain Perry, Squeegeelution Tee Shirt, christwilson, windowashing.com, Don't Look At Me podcast, singer, Ojai, song writing, interview
How fitting that Rain Perry wears the Squeegee Power and joins me on the podcast.

My upper Ojai neighbor Rain Perry swings by the barn to folk things up a bit. We shoot it about family, songwriting, and Keanu Reeves. I heard Rain perform last year at the Ojai Art Center Jammin’ series. And its one of the few times in my life when live music actually got me misty eyed. It was something about her warm inviting accessible sound and then these simple poetic emotionally layered lyrical melodies. Truly amazing.

It’s good to get to know her better. I wash Rain’s windows and I’d like to wash yours too. Learn more about Rain on her website. And send her some dopamine bursts by retweeting her @rainperry and liking her facebook statuses. Here’s a link to her reverbnation.com page. You can hear all the songs that I play on the podcast here. I believe her version of Let’s Get It On is the best cover of that song EVER.

Enjoy the show.

My BooBoo Sonia Erneux visits with me in the garden.

Been a little sick for the past week. Upper respiratory congestion, plugged bronchials and so on. I won’t bore you. So I kindly asked my Booboo Sonia if she’d be on the mics with me this week and it turned out wonderfully. Sonia designs Love Tanjane her clothing line that’s produced locally and sells all over the world. She blogs pretty regularly on matters of decor and design, art and food and other things she finds inspiring here: StuffSoniaLoves. She posts her paintings on her other blog: SoniaPaintsStuff. We talk about art and alcohol, sing Sugarman over and over again, and giggle.

I catch up with my baby boy Enoch Wilson on the phone. We discuss his IMDB profile and role in the Jack Me movie of 2008 that’s available on Amazon instant video. To see his comic lines and his brother Elijah’s confessions as well in this very bad parody of the Super Size Me documentary, skip forward to minute 47:00. Those scenes were shot at Happy Valley School in the commons during the summer of 2007 I think.

I mention the Calton Institute’s book Rich Food Poor Food. They are on the Bullet Proof Executive’s blog. I’ll be setting up the affiliate banner for Bullet Proof Exec soon. On the podcast front, I enjoy Duncan Trussel Family Hour podcast and want to acknowledge it. Figure it out… Enjoy this show.

Ojai Face design day.

I went kinda crazy on the Ojai Face designs today. I got out of bed this morning and my son Elijah had emailed me a link to a piece by Hunter S. Thompson from 1955. It is titled Security and the legendary Gonzo journalist in all of his 18 year old wonder waxes eloquently about avoiding the rut of security and making life an adventure.

Ojai Face, smiley face, ojai, gonzojai, hunter s. thompson, fear and loathing, depp,
We were somewhere on the edge of Oak View when the drugs began to take hold.

Well that inspired me to make a GONZOJAI Ojai Smiley Face variant with a HST theme. I like how it has a sort of racoon, nighttime, Hamburgaler feel to it. Really makes me smile.

I took this nudge from the muse and kept going. I made the screen, had several puffs of light hit me from above and then made some more magic on the computer. Easily distracted, I wandered to the garden and laid in the hammock for 7 minutes. Sweet release ran through me, and I was at it again.

Pulling an old image from my smart Samsung Charge phone. It really does take a decent picture. Better than any iPhone images I’ve been in. While I’d been at a job last week, I saw a note pad from a regional airport and I snapped a quick picture of it with my phone and went on. Here’s what I made. Again, a variant on the Ojai Smiley face, this time with the dream of an airplane and a wind sock limp in the afternoon lull.

Fly Ojai Airport how convenient.

Ok, that’s enough for now. I have to add these to my store. What a great day.

Bret Bradigan is my guest on episode 005 of Don’t Look At ME!

Chris T. Wilson, Bret Bradigan, Don't Look At Me, podcast, interview, Ojai Quarterly
If you're happy I live in Ojai, thank Bret Bradigan.

My former boss and the fellow who accepts responsibility for bringing me to Ojai joins me for a conversation in the barn. Bret Bradigan publishes the Ojai Quarterly magazine and monthly real estate magazine for Ojai. He’s been writing about the town’s eccentric people and social culture since 2000.

As publisher of the local newspaper for 9 years, Bret has had a big impact on Ojai, plus his dedication and participation in local organizations and service groups has been a key to this urbane small town journalist corralling some of the best local writers, photographers and creative media artists into his herd.

I have learned a lot from Bret over the years. And he continues to be a source of inspiration to me and the community. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

And I have a conversation with my son Elijah Wilson that deteriorates into a giggle fest pretty quickly.

Don’t Look At Me podcast Episode 004 with Fire Wolf Skip Schuckmann

Skip Schuckman, Dont Look At Me, Ojai, Podcast, Chris T Wilson
Artist Skip Schuckmann joins me for episode 4 of the podcast

What a gift to know Skip Schuckmann. This man’s ability to rap has challenged my ability to apprehend for nearly a dozen years now. He was one of my earliest friends and mentors in Ojai; providing me with a place to live, a car to drive and words of wisdom that dwell within me to this day.

We laugh at the outset of the conversation realizing that we’ve been visiting for the first 20 minutes or so without recording. Still we pick up and have a wonderful talk that I hope you enjoy and learn from. I’m enlightened further.

From the Kiva’s he’s built at the Ojai Foundation, Full Circle Farm and creek side hovels at Casa Barranca to the fire heated soaking tub and free form art he created on the back patio of the art gallery experiment he co-created in downtown Ojai in 2001, Skip has been a dynamic aspect of what is the fringe creative element that has been swirling in the Ojai Valley since long before it was given that name. That means a lot to me even if it is hard to put into words. I like how it feels to try and practically apply his wisdom to my own life and there-in find my own wisdom.

Thanks for all the amazon.com purchases you’ve been making through the affiliate banner. Please keep it up. I’m currently in negotiation for my first local sponsor that should be up and running by episode 5 next week.

I’m looking forward to my next few guests. I think you’ll like them too. Have fun out there. Thanks for listening, talking about it, sharing with your friends and supporting this hand made media with your donations and attention. Until next week. Enjoy!

Don’t Look At Me podcast episode 003 with Jim Bailey

Jim Bailey, science, teacher, Ojai, podcast, surfing, interview, ukulele, dont look at me
Jim Bailey is a good angel knowledge fountain. May every shoulder have one.

Famous and popular Ojai Science Teacher Jim Bailey schools me for episode 3 of the Don’t Look At ME Podcast. You are in for a treat. I’m so fortunate to have a few good friends and grateful to have them willing to participate in this experiment in recorded conversation.

Jim Bailey breaks it down for us with the scientific wisdom and knowledge of the likes of zoologist Richard Dawkins and paleontologist Richard Leakey.

Mister Bailey makes the learning so easy to digest when he enlightens us further with his recent implementation of “bulletproof” bio-hacking techniques. I mention 4-Hour biohacker Tim Ferris and personal development obsessionist Steve Pavlina. See Pavlina’s blog for some interesting mind dumping.

Then Mister Bailey tickles his ukulele and serenades our sweet ear drums with a song from which I drew liberally to make today’s episode’s bumper music. Even if you have to skip forward (if you think you can handle missing any sweet drop of this conversational nectar) you’re going to want to hear Jim sing.

But first I dial up my son Elijah Wilson and he talks about “going pro” in his quest for new experiences and maintaining a strong youthful physical form. Apparently he is inspired to try screen printing and stencil design, and he’s trying to figure out his Speedball screen printing kit. He likes go-get-’em-tiger reminders from the likes of Steven Pressfield and Seth Godin. He may get lost in Mitch Hedberg interviews and then he’s leapt across the metaphorical world reading interviews with Sacramento punk, hip hop, noise band Death Grips. Thanks to Minneapolis bike shop Sunrise Cyclery, Elijah can listen to himself from the saddle as he thinks of new jokes and freezes his bones in the mid-west.

Steven Pressfield Ojai Quote
This quote about Ojai alone makes this book a worthwhile read. War of Art by Steven Pressfield

That’s the essence of my inspiration friends. I even put a couple sound effects in this one. Terrence McKenna says “Harry Weiner” and we remember episode 001 bumper musician’s La Chat.
